Knockhill
The Friday free practice and qualifying session were missed as Graham attended a family funeral. On his return to the circuit, torrential downpour saw the paddock flooded and awnings of the teams collapsing from the weight of the gathered water.
Whilst the Friday sessions took place in damp and then dry conditions, the qualifying session on the Saturday was wet and raining throughout. Obviously, with the difference in conditions, a qualifying time in the wet would not give a good position compared to the rest of the field who qualified in the dry. Following a visit to the race director, Stuart Higgs, Graham was allowed to start the race at the rear of the grid.
Determined to finish after the DNFs of Snetterton and Oulton Park, Graham started the race from the back of the grid making up a number of places on the opening few laps. Although not the most confident rider in the wet, the race was going fairly well up to the halfway stage. With Knockhill being a short circuit, being just a few seconds off the pace of the leaders leads to lapping being a common occurrence at the circuit. In the wet conditions, the spread of lap time is increased. Being wary of this, paired with the determination to finish and not interfere with the race leaders, Graham moved off of the racing line to allow faster riders through and as soon as the wheels of the motorcycle touched the wet painted surface, the rider and bike were soon sliding up the rumble strip and into the gravel.
