Starting 27th on the grid Graham made a good start, making up a considerable number of places in the first two corners. Down the back straight, he held these places entering the left-handed part of the Esses Complex. However, on exiting the right-handed part whilst still on the edge of the tyre, too much throttle was applied too quickly, which resulted in the back wheel spinning up and sliding away low-siding the motorcycle. The rider slid up the track helpless whilst watching the oncoming riders approach him.
